Course Title: Friction & Anti-Friction Bearings
Location: San Joaquin Field Division
Sponsor: O&M Training Center
Participants: H.E.P. Electricians, Mechanics, Utility Craftsworkers, and Mobile Mechanics
Class Limits: Minimum 10, Maximum 20

Course Information: This 3-day course is structured for O&M personnel who are involved in the operation and/or maintenance of rotating equipment.  Course includes: types of bearings, bearing nomenclature, bearing application, lubrication, seals, installation and troubleshooting.
Class Prerequisites: Participants should read Chapter Three of the home study course or TPC Mechanical Maintenance Unit #304, if available in the Field Division Library, or have a working knowledge of bearings prior to attending course.

  • Review of friction

  • Definition of bearings and classifications

  • Lubrication principles and factors

  • Mechanical factors of friction bearings

  • Materials and finishes required

  • Post design factors and maintenance

  • Hydrostatic lift and oil grooves

  • Operation problems and troubleshooting

  • Introduction to rolling element bearings

  • Bearing – seals and shields

  • Bearing mounting and preload

  • Shaft and housing fits/internal clearance

  • Failure analysis/bearing do’s and don’ts

  • Lubrication of rolling element bearings

  • Bearing safety/hazards troubleshooting
