Course Title: Protective Relay Application
Location: San Joaquin Field Division

Time: 0730 to 1530 hours, Days 1 thru 3

Course Information: This is a 24-hour basic course in the application of protective relays. This course is designed for the student who wants to gain a basic understanding of how protective relays are applied in the protection of electrical equipment and systems. The student will gain knowledge in basic design concepts, how and why relays operate and what to expect when a relay has operated.
Class Prerequisites:
  • The student should have a basic understanding of the need for protection of electrical equipment and systems.
  • The student should have a basic understanding of electrical drawings. Prior attendance of the Electrical Print Reading Class sponsored by the Training Center is recommended, but not required.

Class Subjects

Day One - 8 Hours Day Two - 8 Hours
  • Device numbers and abbreviations associated with relaying

  • Current and potential transformers

  • Terms associated with relaying

  • Review of DWR protection drawings

  • Bus and feeder circuit protection

  • Review of Day 1

  • Motor protection

  • Generator protection

  • Transformer protection

  • In-class problems

Day Three - 8 Hours
  • Review of Day 1 and 2

  • Transmission line protection

  • In-class problem

  • Wrap up and course evaluation
