HYDROELECTRIC PLANT OPERATOR APPRENTICE

DEFINITION

Under close supervision as an indentured apprentice, to learn progressively skilled work in the operation and control of aqueduct facilities and hydroelectric generating and pumping plants; and to do other related work.

JOB CHARACTERISTICS

This class is designed for entrance and performance in an apprentice training program leading to journeyperson status as Hydroelectric Plant Operator. Persons in this class are indentured apprentices in training under the provisions of apprenticeship standards and written apprenticeship agreements as defined in Chapter 4, Division 3, of the Labor Code. Inability to maintain satisfactory programs in the academic and vocational work of the apprenticeship program is sufficient cause for separation from the program.

TYPICAL TASKS

Assists a journeyperson operator and receives training in performing either manual or remote-control water and power operating and switching; learns safe operating and clearance procedures; learns to make routine inspections of generating and pumping units, auxiliaries and switchyard equipment; learns to record readings of meter gauges and indicators, and make logbook entries; learns to detect any abnormal readings, sounds, smells or other indication of trouble; learns to check local and remote recording instruments and adjust pens, charts and tape as necessary; learns to prepare routine daily and monthly reports; participates in after-hour classroom and/or home study training in trade-related courses necessary to complete his/her training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I

Experience: One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Service Assistant (Maintenance and Operations).

Or II

Education: Equivalent to graduation from high school.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of: Basic arithmetic and algebra; electrical fundamentals and mechanical principles.

Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; learn rapidly; follow directions; acquire acceptable work habits such as punctuality, skill, neatness and dependability; work safely; make satisfactory progress in the prescribed academic and practical work in an approved apprenticeship program for Hydroelectric Plant Operator.

SPECIAL PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Willingness to work under close supervision; willingness to improve knowledge and efficiency by completing related courses as directed.

SPECIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Normal sense of smell and hearing.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of courses in or knowledge of blueprint reading, electronics, hydraulics, mechanical drawing, trigonometry, physics and chemistry.
